Product Design Just Isn't Solely About Mockups And Prototypes

Product Design Just Isn't Solely About Mockups And Prototypes

Design principles, design instruments, sketches, free mockups, prototypes. I'm not going to speak about any of the above in this explicit piece. My goal is to give you a quick thought of what I’m thinking because the "extra mile" when speaking for product designers.

The design process my group is at the moment following
Let’s set the context. I’m primarily speaking for product design in software products, as this is my area of expertise and primary experience in working with designers. The process that my groups are currently following with regards to product design is pretty typical. A quick description:

Content: It follows the market and consumer research and it’s the stage the place the product workforce is putting down every little detail related with the product requirements.
Wireframes: Once the content is there, the designers begin creating the first sketches and wireframes of the product.
Mockups: After a number of iterations of the wireframes, we’re creating pixel excellent prototypes (which can be going underneath a new set of iterations) and the ultimate mockups are provided to the builders, in order that they'll build the product.
Iterations: As soon as the product is shipped, based on person feedback and analytics, the product is iterated in order that we will hit our goals, enhance person expertise and drive further adoption.
Strolling the extra mile
I suppose that a design process like the one described above is not a lot of a surprise. So, let’s leap to the essence of this article. Clearly, the next, are not core expertise that a designer should possess, however in my perspective, these are the skills that could give a designer a slight advantage, so that she or he may take their product designs to the subsequent level.

1. Understand the market
Some basic data regarding the trade the place the product operates is beneficial. Obviously, this knowledge will be acquired after a while working in a company from the crew itself. However just a few readings concerning the market, its primary lengthy-lasting problems, how the highest competitors are coping with them may give you a huge advantage and save you a variety of time from going back and opening Sketch once again.

2. Have some F2F experience with the person
Sure, the PM is the one accountable for bringing within the insights from the market and the purchasers, alongsideside the necessities for the product. However, spending a while, whilst a silent listeners in just a few calls with clients may give you a significantly better understanding and perspective about their needs and pains. The data are the driver, however the direct feedback from the customers and particularly observing their emotions when talking about their pains are the noise within the back seat. In case you can listen to that noise carefully, you’ll see that there’s a lot to be taught there. Strive joining a colleague of yours in a call with a shopper associated with their wants as soon as in a while. You could be surprised.
